May is the month for the new Minnesota State Fair Ag Hort Bee -- including Crop Art -- rulebook. For many years, the rulebooks have been paper. They were mailed to all past participants. It was a wake-up call to start thinking about this year's State Fair.

Maybe five years ago, the paper books were no longer mailed to everyone. They continued to be published, but they were only mailed to people who specifically requested them every year. The main way to learn the rules -- and to enter the competitions -- has become the Internet.

This year marks the first time the paper rulebooks are no longer printed. The rules are only available online.

That said, it's time to start thinking about this year's Crop Art.

If you're going to participate, it's time to start thinking about your crop art for this year's Minnesota State Fair exhibit/competition.

The entire Ag-Hort-Bee official rule book is available for download as a PDF at the competitions information page on the State Fair website.

Deadline for registration is Friday, August 10. It's easy to register online. There is no entry fee.

Be sure to review the rules before starting. The registration form asks you what categories you wish to enter and there are a lot of categories to consider.

You must deliver your finished work to the Ag-Hort-Bee building on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Monday, August 20 between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Do you need a bit of inspiration before starting this year's Crop Art project? Take a look through "Corn Palaces and Butter Queens" to see all that has gone before.

Before you're finished paging through this book, I'm certain you will be grateful for the 24-inch by 40-inch maximum size restriction in the official Minnesota State Fair Crop Art rules.David Steinlichthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603448356360110818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8847092145203653409.post-31613415853612142802011-12-08T12:36:00.002-06:002011-12-08T13:03:37.949-06:00Crop Art on television

No-one got kicked off the island for using non-Minnesota-native seeds.
My friend, Lance Ward, did this crop art-themed gag cartoon. Thanks, Lance!

Lance is the editorial cartoonist for the Woodbury Bulletin, though they foolishly do not feature his cartoons online. For shame! Lance's decidedly adult comics appear on his Tatertot Diaper Man / Scars website.

Joel and I went for a very short trip to Des Moines this week to visit the Iowa State Fair. There were almost no competitions to view (except livestock), no shade, and almost ALL the food came from the same national vendor (saw at least a dozen identical Walking Taco! stands).

I knew they didn't have a crop art competition, but they did have some crop art sponsored by the soybean and corn industries which looked as if it had been done by kids (but mostly wasn't). I thought you might be interested in the photos.

Too bad they don't have an "Out of State" category!
